|Charismatic Renewal in the Roman Catholic Church
We call "charismatic" this Renewal because "this charismatic dimension, which is inherent to the Church, is brought to a higher sense of consciousness." (Cardinal Suenens). In the Renewal, Paul VI recognized "the life-giving breath of the Spirit which came to awake the dulled energies in the Church, to invite sleeping charisms, to instill this sense of vitality and elation which, at each period of history, defines the Church itself as young and up-to-date, ready to announce its eternal message today, and is happy to do it." (allocution to Cardinals on the 21st of December 1973).
Outpouring of the Holy Spirit
The outpouring of the Spirit is not a new sacrament : the Holy Spirit already put on us an indelible stamp at our Baptism and our Confirmation. Actually, the person who asks for the outpouring of the Spirit realizes, in a personal approach to conversion, that his life does not really sufficiently correspond to that of a real child of God. He accepts therefore to let the Holy Spirit lead his life and to ask Him to help him become, attitude-wise, what he was in the moment of Baptism : " ... (Rom 5: 8, 14) ... (Gal 5:25).
The Emmanuel Community should not be treated like other secular religious institutions, rather, it should simply be seen among the new communities, which are fruits of the a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit that Pope Leo XIII asked for the Church at the end of the second millenium and in response to the prayer that Pope John XXIII wrote, shortly after his election, during the opening of the Second Vatican Council : "Lord Holy Spirit, renew in our days your marvelous works in a new Pentecost."
